Books from Lithuania, promotes Lithuanian literature in the world. Books from Lithuania informs and consults publishing houses and translators abroad on questions connected to Lithuanian literature and translations and publishes informational materials about Lithuanian literature and Lithuanian writers. We also compile and continuously update a bibliography of Lithuanian literature translated into other languages, organise seminars for translators and publishers, and prepare presentations and readings of books and other works by Lithuanian writers abroad. Books from Lithuania has had the honour of preparing the Lithuanian literature programmes for the 2002 Frankfurt Book Fair, the 2005 Gothenburg Book Fair, and the 2007 Turin Book Fair, where Lithuania was the guest country.
The Lithuanian literature translation subsidy programme began in 2001 at the initiative of Books from Lithuania. The purpose of this programme is to subsidise translations of works by Lithuanian writers into other languages and to encourage publishing houses in other countries to translate and publish Lithuanian literature more intensively. This successful programme receives an increasing number of applications from foreign publishers each year. Subsidies for the translation of 115 Lithuanian books into 23 languages have been granted since the programme’s inception. Funds for the programme are provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Culture Support Foundation of the Republic of Lithuania.
