New translation grants available: invitation to submit applications
The International Cultural Programme Centre once more invites applicants to submit applications to participate in the Translation Grant Programme.
The Grant Programme for the translation of Lithuanian (or related to Lithuania) texts (books, publications) into foreign languages was launched in 2001 by the public organisation Books from Lithuania,which has since been closed. Its activities are now being continued by the Literature Projects Unit of theInternational Cultural Programme Centre.
Applications will be considered by an independent selection committee, consisting of five experts representing various research and cultural institutions.
The purpose of the Translation Grant Programme is to promote the translation of Lithuanian (or related to Lithuania) texts (books, publications) into foreign languages. The Programme aims to encourage foreign publishers, and in certain cases Lithuanian publishers also, to engage in the translation and publication of Lithuanian (or related to Lithuania) texts (books, publications).
Since its launch in 2001, the translation of over 140 Lithuanian books into more than 20 languages has been promoted within the framework of the Programme.
The Translation Grant Programme aims to promote the translation of longer texts (books, publications) as well as (sample) translations of book extracts.
Priority in book translation grants will be given to foreign publishers intending to publish a translation of a longer text (book, publication) by a Lithuanian (or related to Lithuania) author (or authors) into a foreign language. Lithuanian publishers may also participate in the Programme, but they are required to promote the publication of the book in a foreign language and to present a preliminary plan for the dissemination (distribution) of the book abroad.
When applying, publishers may expect to be allocated partialor total coverage of the cost of the translation. Grants will be allocated for the translation of original works of literature, fiction, children’s literature, publications on the cultural heritage, or works on the humanities (philosophy, literary criticism, non-fiction essay writing, history, and other fields) as well as for the translation of other important texts (books, publications).
The Translation Grant Programme aims to promote only translations of texts (books, publications) that are previously unpublished in the language they are to be translated into. Priority will be given to authors whose writing is being translated into the target language for the first time.
Authors, translators and publishers, residing in Lithuania or abroad, are all eligible to apply for sample translation grants. Grants will be given for translations of extracts of original works of literature, fiction, children’s literature, publications on the cultural heritage and works on the humanities (philosophy, literary criticism, non-fiction essay writing, history, and other fields). Only published works may be chosen for translation.
Applications for book translation grants must consist of the following:
· a completed application form
· a copy of the contract with the copyright holder(s)
· a copy of the contract with the translator(s)
· the translator's qualifications (e.g. CV, previous translations)
· a brief presentation of the publishing company
· a covering letter justifying the selection of the book to be translated
· a covering letter justifying the publication of the book in a foreign language
· a preliminary plan for the distribution of the book abroad (for Lithuanian publishers only)
Applications for sample translation grants must consist of the following documents:
· a completed application form
· a covering letter justifying the selection of the piece to be translated
· the translator’s CV and qualifications
· the consent of the author, or the copyright holder(s), to the translation of the text
· a copy of the text chosen for translation (a maximum of 40,000 characters, with spaces, for prose, and 120 lines for poetry).
Upon selection, the International Cultural Programme Centre will sign an agreement with the translator(s). The payment for the sample translation will be transferred to the translator’s account after receipt of the translated extract, which must be submitted within four months of the signing of the agreement. The International Cultural Programme Centre will have the right to use the translation of the extract or to transfer it to third parties. The translator will, in parallel, retain the right to use the extract.
All applications will be considered by an independent selection committee consisting of five experts. All applicants will be contacted within three weeks after the selection committee has made its final decisions.
Applications may only be submitted by e-mail.
The deadline for the submission of applications for book translation grants and/or sample translation grants is June 1. Please submit your applications as early as possible.
